…Our friend Frank Coates is an animal whisperer. One time climbing Sombrero Peak some crows flew over us at the summit, and Frank called to them. They circled a few times as he spoke impressionistic crow, and when they flew off one remained, perched on a boulder nearby. The crow would say something and Frank’d answer and elaborate. This went on for longer than you’d expect a man and crow to stay engaged in conversation.
The other day here at the Roadrunner Club, Frank drove up to our house where we were pruning plants along the driveway. When a Roadrunner sped by along the oleander hedges, Frank called to it. The bird stopped, Frank chikking and humming Roadrunner talk, the bird coming closer and closer, till it was a few feet away. Soon it found a comfy place to sit and listen as Frank carried on, suddenly plumping out its feathers so it looked twice as large. By the time Frank sped off in the golf cart the bird was nesting alongside the back wheel of our pickup truck in the driveway. The roadrunner stayed there for a long time, mulling things over.
